Catching a fish
Your rod decides how many fish bite on each cast.
Each fish that bites is picked in these steps:
- Your bait rolls a rarity, out of the rarities your rod can land.
- The game looks at the fish of that rarity that live at your fishing spot.
- A fish only bites bait that suits its diet. One that suits your bait counts twice, and an omnivorous fish counts once.
- If no fish of that rarity can take your bait, the game drops down a rarity and tries again, up to three times.
- If the fish it picks has variants, the game rolls once more among the fish and its variants.
Say you fish Coconut Bay with Rice and roll a Rare fish. The Rare fish there are Puffer Fish (omnivorous), Guppy (herbivorous) and Anglerfish (carnivorous). Anglerfish can't take Rice, so the pick is Guppy 67% of the time and Puffer Fish 33%.
Rods
Fish come in six rarities: Common, Fine, Rare, Epic, Legendary and Mythic. A rod can only land the rarities its level allows, and a higher rod can land more than one fish at a time.
The rarities each rod level can land:
- Rods of levels 1 and 2 land Common and Fine fish.
- Rods of levels 3 to 6 add Rare fish.
- Rods of levels 7 to 10 add Epic fish.
- Rods of levels 11 to 15 add Legendary fish.
- Rods of levels 16 to 18 add Mythic fish.
How many fish a rod lands at once:
- Rods of levels 1 to 4 always land one fish.
- Rods of levels 5 to 8 land one fish 90% of the time and two fish 10% of the time.
- Rods of levels 9 to 12 land one fish 82% of the time, two fish 15% of the time and three fish 3% of the time.
- Rods of levels 13 and 14 land one fish 75% of the time, two fish 20% of the time, three fish 4% of the time and four fish 1% of the time.
- Rods of levels 15 to 18 land one fish 68% of the time, two fish 26% of the time, three fish 5% of the time, four fish 1% of the time and five fish 0.1% of the time.
Variants
Some fish have variants: other colours or forms of the same fish. The game has 56 of them. A variant has the same rarity, diet and spot as its fish, and it sells for more. Each one turns up at most 1% of the time its fish is picked.
You can also raise variants in the Hatchery: fry have a chance to turn into one.
Weights
Every fish you catch has a weight. The game first picks one of the fish’s size ranges, then a weight anywhere inside it. Each fish’s page gives its lightest and heaviest weight. Red Snapper, for example, has three ranges: 0.52 kg to 1 kg (30%), 1 kg to 2.5 kg (60%) and 2.5 kg to 3.1 kg (10%).
The Bestiary keeps the lightest and the heaviest of each fish you have caught.
Diving with Dave
Dave brings fish back from his dives. He finds the fish of the spot your boat is at, and each depth of the Blue Hole adds fish of its own. Rods and bait play no part. Dave rolls his own rarity, and his upgrades decide how rare it can be.
