When the Merchant comes

Carthage, Germania and Rome each last three fights, and the Merchant opens on the last day of each. The Senate has a single fight and no Merchant.

A visit

Each visit lays out eight items: two passive, two spawned, one instant and three pieces of equipment, each drawn at random from what’s left of its kind. What one visit has shown you doesn’t come back later in the run: each visit draws from what the visits before it left. Your party shares one purse: the crowd’s pay for each of you goes into it, and whatever anyone buys comes out of it.

Coins

You pay in coins, which come from:

  • Your purse at the start of a run: 30 coins, or none on the hardest difficulties.
  • The crowd, which pays each player up to 20 coins a fight, by how much you won them over.
  • Side jobs, offered before some fights, which pay if you pull them off.

What it sells

Its stock comes in four kinds: 5 instant, 17 passive, 19 equipment and 10 spawned items.

What each kind does:

  • An instant item works the moment you buy it, on every player: the Medicines heal each of you, the Bandages and the Sewing Kit cure each of you.
  • A passive item stays with your party for the rest of the run: the run keeps a list of what you’ve bought, and the game checks it wherever an item has its say.
  • Equipment waits on a rack for one player to take: each of you wears one piece at a time, and taking another puts the one you wore back.
  • A spawned item is a weapon the arena lays out for you, each at a spot of its own; its row links to the weapon’s page.

Buy out its whole stock at once for Moneybags, and buy every kind of item over your runs for Collector.

Fine print

Some items do more, or less, than their text says:

  • The Medicines heal 15, 20 and 30, and each is sold in one act: the first in Carthage, the second in Germania, the third in Rome.
  • Ankh is used up the moment it brings you back.
  • With Poisoned Apples, each basic and elite enemy has a 50% chance to start a fight hurt; masters and bosses never do.
  • Red Meat keeps the experience you’d lose at the end of training from Legionnaire on.
